Lightning Rings and Gravity Waves: Insights Into the Giant Eruption Plume From Tonga's Hunga Volcano on 15 January 2022

چکیده

On 15 January 2022, Hunga Volcano in Tonga produced the most violent eruption modern satellite era, sending a water-rich plume at least 58 km high. Using combination of satellite- and ground-based sensors, we investigate astonishing rate volcanic lightning (>2,600 flashes min?1) what it reveals about dynamics submarine eruption. In map view, locations form radially expanding rings. We show that initial ring is co-located with an internal gravity wave traveling >80 m s?1 stratospheric umbrella cloud. Buoyant oscillations plume's overshooting top generated waves, which enhanced turbulent particle interactions triggered high-current electrical discharges unusually high altitudes. Our analysis attributes intense activity to exceptional mass (>5 × 109 kg s?1), rapidly cloud, entrainment abundant seawater vaporized from magma-water interaction vent.

New insights into the 1999 eruption of Shishaldin volcano, Alaska, based on acoustic data

Data collected by a pressure sensor provide new insights into the 1999 eruption of Shishaldin volcano, Unimak Island, Alaska. On 19 April 1999, after 3 months of unrest and an extended period of low-level Strombolian activity, Shishaldin experienced a Subplinian eruption (ash plume to >16 km), followed by several episodes of strong Strombolian explosions. Acoustic data from the pressure sensor ...

Predictability of Volcano Eruption: lessons from a basaltic effusive volcano

Volcano eruption forecast remains a challenging and controversial problem despite the fact that data from volcano monitoring significantly increased in quantity and quality during the last decades. This study uses pattern recognition techniques to quantify the predictability of the 15 Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) eruptions in the 1988-2001 period using increase of the daily seismicity rate as a...

Deaths and injuries in the eruption of Galeras Volcano , Colombia , 14 January 1993

Six volcanologists and three tourists were killed in the crater of Galeras Volcano, Colombia, when it erupted without warning. The scientists were attending the United Nations International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction Workshop which had been convened to improve monitoring, research and disaster mitigation at Galeras, at the time the most active and one of the most hazardous volcanoes ...

Lightning Associated with the August 18, 1992, Eruption of Crater Peak Vent, Mount Spurr Volcano, Alaska

The Alaska Volcano Observatory's lightning detection system detected and located 171 lightning strokes during the August 18, 1992, eruption of the Crater Peak vent of Mount Spurr volcano in Alaska. The strokes, predominantly intracloud, were detected during a 70-minute interval that began more than an hour into the eruption. All detected strokes were of positive polarity. The spatial distributi...

Insights into the ground attachment process of natural lightning gained from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke

[1] We present measured electric and magnetic field and current derivatives from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke that was initiated by a dart-stepped leader and that involved an upward connecting leader. The initial rising portion of the current (integrated dI/dt) waveform is composed of a ‘‘slow front’’ rising to 20 kA in 2.2 ms, followed by a ‘‘fast transition’’ from 20 to 27 kA in 0.2 ...
